China converts vacant schools into elderly care facilities as birth rate falls

Falling enrolments and a rapidly aging population are pushing local governments to repurpose empty classrooms. Primary school admissions and preschool enrolments each fell approximately 10% in 2025, while the total number of educational institutions across China dropped by over 6% to 440,700.
