China's wind and solar cross into majority capacity as coal exit costs emerge
By end of July 2026, China's cumulative solar installed capacity had surpassed coal power capacity — a structural milestone. Wind and solar together generated 2.3 trillion kWh in 2025 and exceeded 22% of total power generation, but who pays for the coal transition remains unresolved.
